Do You Need To Define The Relationship To Save Your Relationship From Problems?

Some couples meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after. If you ask them when they decided to define the relationship, they will probably give you a look that clearly says they think you must be off your head. After all, falling in love, building a relationship and living together without any problems comes naturally, doesn’t it?

Actually, no. For most couples building a lasting relationship requires work.

Falling in love is easy, most people can manage that. But falling in love is just phase 1. Getting a relationship to work and to carry on working involves effort. Sometimes keeping a relationship on track takes planning. Keeping a relationship strong requires good communication between the partners and the willingness to give and take.

The key to having a seemingly effortless happy relationship lies in communication. Some couples (the lucky few) fall into the habit of open communication naturally. The fact that these couples talk to each other all the time means that they get to know each other inside out. As far as is humanly possible, they each know what their partner is thinking. They don’t need to define the relationship. This degree of empathy makes it easy for them to give and take. Understanding why somebody does something makes it easier to forgive them. Understanding your partner’s needs makes it easier to give them what they want.

If you are one of the majority who have to work at building a relationship, your first task is to ensure that you and your partner communicate effectively. It can take time to reach the stage where you can talk openly about any subject. Many people find it extremely hard to discuss their feelings. If your partner is one of those people, trust will need to be built up before they will feel comfortable revealing their thoughts and emotions.

In the very early days of a relationship, a couple will be so wrapped up with being in love that nothing else matters. They feel that they don’t need to talk in order to communicate; just being together is all they need. That’s fine as far as it goes. Unfortunately, these feelings don’t last forever.

You and your partner might find talking about your feelings hard even though you have been dating for a while. If so, you should define the relationship to save your relationship from running into problems in the future. You need to make sure you both have the same aims and expectations for the relationship.

If you are not communicating well with your partner, you can only guess at how your partner wants the relationship to develop. Problems will arise if your guess is incorrect. Maybe you see the relationship as being long-term. Perhaps you are dreaming of marriage and raising a family. If your partner has other plans, your relationship is almost certainly heading for problems.

If you are dreaming of weddings while your partner sees the relationship as a casual fling, you are heading for a broken heart. The longer you go on without defining the relationship, the worse the eventual hurt is going to be.

Most situations aren’t as dramatic as one person aiming for marriage while the other person is thinking about moving on. Often it is just a case of getting into step with your partner. But the sooner you define the relationship, the better. You can save your relationship from problems if you are both working together to achieve the same aims.

The way to save your relationship from problems is to communicate. When you define the relationship at an early stage, effective communication will be easier to achieve.
